Scriptures

And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Genesis 2:22-25

He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22

House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. Proverbs 19:14

But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate. Mark 10:6-9

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong doing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. I Corinthians 13:4-7

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? II Corinthians 6:14

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, His body, and is Himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of the water with the Word... Ephesians 5:22-33

Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Hebrews 13:4

Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. I Timothy 3:12

Teaching

Marriage - Jack Hayford

But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 1 Corinthians 11:3

The relationship between God as “head” and Christ as Son is a model for the relationship between husband and wife. It provides us with principles that can be applied within the marriage relationship. We are to share a mutual love (John 5:20; 14:31), live in unity (John 10:30; 14:9, 11), and hold one another in highest esteem (John 8:49, 54). In the description of the virtuous wife of Proverbs 31, the writer noted that the husband rose up and called his wife blessed and that he praised her (Prov. 31:28). To honor, to hold in esteem, and praise your mate builds an unshakable trust in each other. Husbands are also to care for their wives (Eph. 5:28), while wives are to exercise authority entrusted to them with humility and without competition (Phil. 2:3). As we follow the principles illustrated in Jesus and the Father’s relationship, we will see our marriages built up in faith, impenetrable to the enemy’s devices, and extending ministry in Jesus’ Name.

How to Get Engaged –When You’re Already Married - DrsLes and Leslie Parrotts

And you will make a new start, listening obediently to God, keeping all his commandments that I’m commanding you today. God, your God, will outdo himself in making things go well for you. Deuteronomy 30:8-9

Recently we sat on the floor in a crowded airline terminal and played a game of Scrabble on our trusty iPad. We had about thirty minutes to kill before we could board our flight and a quick game would do the trick. We’ve had a longstanding competition in our marriage with this game. We play to win. And on this occasion the game was especially tight. The score was teetering back and forth with nearly every move. Triple word scores hung in the balance. It was anyone’s game. It was also time to board our flight and we barely heard the announcement from the agent. We’d lost track of where we were and how much time had passed. We had to scramble to gather our belongings and get on the plane. That’s engagement. Researchers sometimes call it “flow” and it has to do with a state of being so wrapped up in an activity that we lose ourselves in it. If you were to ask us how we felt in the midst of our Scrabble competition we would have likely said, “nothing.” We were just passing time. But it was the engagement of our minds and our beings in the process that brought about a sense of satisfaction that heightens happiness. And researchers are finding that a sense of engagement together as a couple is essential to a healthy marriage. Of course, engagement doesn’t require competition. Engagement can ensue while tending a garden, talking together about your goals and dreams on a road trip, playing or listening to music, working on a home improvement project, or preparing for an important milestone. Anything that includes the loss of self-consciousness during an absorbing activity is engagement. So as you begin a new year together in your marriage, how will you cultivate more engagement in your relationship? Reflect and Respond - What can the two of you do, in specific terms, to bring about more engagement in your relationship this year?
